The Surf’s up!

Say you don’t have a wi-fi hotspot around, but you still need to get online with your MacBook, what’s the obvious choice? No big deal you think; just pair your mobile phone with your MacBook (via cable or bluetooth) and use the mobile’s modem to surf on EDGE, 3G/UMTS or GPRS. But what if your mobile is an iPhone?

Now that is the biggest iPhone flop i came around. Sure, hotspots are faster and probably even free, but if there’s none available, surfing GSM is better than nothing. Weird that that’s not possible with the iPhone.

Ah, but this has already been hacked and proven that the iphone IS capable of tethering via bluetooth.

But if you want to do that, you have to 1st) jailbreak your iPhone to abuse the EDGE connection and 2nd) probably break the contract you’ve signed with your iPhones country specific carrier (at&t/o2/t-mobile), which containes the ‘fair use vs. unlimited” clause.

Now who want’s to do that?

Ummm…a whole lot of people. Do you think the people who are hacking the iPhone to open up all of its features care about a silly contract with at&t? I don’t think so. That’s why its called hacking.

It would not concern me as well if i can buy the iPhone without contract, but i don’t know if that is possible. Is it? I mean, a simfree hack is gold if you can pick your carrier yourself, but it’s not really that elite if you still have 2 years ahead of contract fees with at&t as a bonus to your handpicked carrier fees.

Or am i missing something here?

It is possible. You can set up your contract over iTunes at home. Or not!

Boss (as nerdy as he is) pre-ordered an iPhone today and said that he won’t keep it for himself. Sounds good to me. We’ll see… Second nerd in charge would be me.

    :D
