Samsung S204N Lightscribe Support for OS X

After a lot of searching and reading Mac forums, i finally found out how to enable Lightscribe with my new external Samsung Burner SE-S204N (20x DVD±R, 16x DVD+DL), so i thought i share this info with the people who are googling for it.

I used Disc Cover RE (included in Roxio Toast Titanium 8.0.3) and most importantly, to make it all work in the first place, the latest Lighscribe host software LS 1.10.27.1 buy HP (yes it’s by HP, but don’t be worried).

Without the new host software, Toast will not recognize your burner as a Lightscribe device. They say Smileonmymac’s DiscLabel is the best Lightscribe labeler, but i have not tried that one myself, since Disc Cover RE came bundled for free with Toast.

    Just curious,

how did you manage it to burn discs in the first place? I can’t burn anything! It only plays back!

I still use OSX 10.3.9, is that it?

I would not believe that, very unlikely. How is the drive listed in your System Profiler?

It should read “TSSTcorp CDDVDW SE-S204N”.

    Yes it does!
    But that’s it.
I’ve tried to burn using iTunes and it say ‘Disc burner or software not found’.
I used Burn (opensource) it recognizes the device but still says it can’t burn.

I guess it’s just one of those days…

    But thanks anyway

My profiler seems to look at my device as a
    USB Mass Storage Device:

    Manufacturer: TSSTcorp
    Model: TSSTcorp CDDVDW SE-S204N
    Drive Type: CD-RW/DVD-RW
    Disc Burning: Not Supported
    Removable Media: Yes
    Detachable Drive: Yes
    Product ID: 8256 ($2040)
    Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec
    Vendor Name: TSSTcorp
    Bus Power (mA): 500
    Serial Number: SATAHH000000004dbe4

As you can see, its a DVD Burner without the burning supported.

Got any suggestions before I start to cry?
    Thanks

Sorry for asking such trivialities, but you have the power adapter connected, right? It is not just usb powered, right?

Well, i’ve searched high and low, but found no clue how to fix this. I guess you will be upgrading OS X anways soon, or? ;)

Hmmm, how about testing it with Toast? Maybe there are some drivers included.

Yes I’ve got the power adapter connected, I understand why you ask (wouldn’t be the first time things don’t work because of something as simple as that, right).

Even rebooted my mac several times.
The strange thing is: Mac recognizes a DVD-burner but… somehow burning is not supported?
I hope I’ll get to upgrading soon, but
I recently lost my job, still searching for a new one, and Mac software doesn’t come cheap here in The Netherlands.

Thanks for the heads up anyway and I’ll give it a shot with Toast, I will keep you posted about the outcome, okay!

    And again, thanks!

    Regards,

    Paul Maassen

    It’s alive . . . ALIVE!!!

Well that’s a rather dramatic way to bring the good news, but I got it working!

I used PatchBurn 3.1.8, and now my profiler gladly reports:

    USB Mass Storage Device:

    Manufacturer: TSSTcorp
    Model: TSSTcorp CDDVDW SE-S204N
    Drive Type: CD-RW/DVD-RW
    Disc Burning: Vendor Supported
    Removable Media: Yes
    Detachable Drive: Yes
    Product ID: 8256 ($2040)
    Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec
    Vendor Name: TSSTcorp
    Bus Power (mA): 500
    Serial Number: SATAHH000000004dbe4

I didn’t testdrive it yet but I’m already happy as a child!

    Thanx 4 all!

Looks like PatchBurn delivered the driver update, nice. That was my hope when i recommended Toast. Glad that it finally worked out :)

    Happy burning, Paul!
